CASRS was formed in 2018 for the purpose of applying complexity science to capital markets, portfolio construction, and economic analysis.
The goal of CASRS is to combine complexity science with traditional investing principles and incorporate the discipline of computer algorithms plus human oversight to build and manage equity portfolios with superior long-term investing characteristics.
CASRS leadership has extensive experience. Founder Bob Hughes and principal Mike Trensky as well as CASRS advisory board members Catherine Bernardo and Alan Gilston bring decades of research, trading, and portfolio management experience, providing practical and complementary perspectives.
CASRS Team
Bob Hughes founded CAS Research and Strategy following more than three decades of experience in investment strategy and macroeconomic analysis. His prior positions include Global Portfolio Strategist for Brown Brothers Harriman, Senior Equity Strategist for State Street Global Markets, and Senior Economic Strategist for Prudential Securities. His education includes an M.A. in Economics from Fordham University and a B.A. in Business(Finance) from Lehigh University.
Bob lives in Fairfield Connecticut, with his wife and two dogs. They have three adult daughters, one living in Connecticut, one in New York City, and one (temporarily) in Texas. Bob and his wife enjoy road trips all over New England, especially along the coast. He is a racquet sports enthusiast, playing platform tennis (paddle) in the winters and tennis in the summers.


Mike Trensky has over thirty years of experience in investments and capital markets with an emphasis on equity analysis and trading. He began his career as an equity analyst, working at Value Line Inc., where he covered the industrial sector, and Salomon Smith Barney, where he covered the retail sector. After Salomon, he transitioned to equity trading, joining Worldco, LLC where he led a small team focusing on large-cap stocks. After Worldco, he began trading for himself, specializing in equity derivatives and developing unique strategies for both speculative and hedging activities. Mike received a B.A. from Emory University and an M.B.A. from Fordham University.
Advisory Board
Catherine Bernardo is an experienced equity investment strategist and quantitative researcher — most recently focusing on emerging markets at Neon Liberty Capital Management. Prior to Neon Liberty, she was as an analyst with Prudential Equity Group’s U.S. Small Cap team and UBS Securities’ U.S. Quantitative and Small Cap teams. Additionally, she was a strategist in the Global Portfolio Strategy team at Brown Brothers Harriman and a quantitative strategist at Delphin Investments. Catherine earned a B.S. in Mathematical Sciences (with a concentration in Chemical Engineering) and B.A. in Economics from the Johns Hopkins University.

Alan Gilston has experience as a Global Asset Allocation Portfolio Manager with a strong performance record and a proven ability to manage multi-asset portfolios including Target Date Funds, Target Risk Funds, and Alternative Investments. His forty years of experience includes Director of Asset Allocation and portfolio manager for OppenheimerFunds and portfolio manager for U.S. Multi-Cap and Balanced accounts for institutional and high net-worth individuals with Schroder Capital.
